Youth Services Overview

There are basic skills that young people should master by the time they reach adulthood.  When this does not happen, many struggle to navigate effectively on their job, at home, at school, and in the community.  Brand New Day believes that leadership development, educational and vocational training, work experience, and community engagement are fundamental to succeeding in mainstream society. Furthermore, guidance and support from professional and caring adults (e.g., teachers, case managers, etc.) ensure youth achieve short and long term success.  Brand New Day’s goal for our Youth Services Division is to establish concrete pathways to career attainment and leadership development while reducing the recidivism rate.

Brand New Day Youth Services’ training program will serve a population of 75 young adults ages 16-24.  The population will break down as follows: We will service forty five (45) students ages 16-21 directly from the city of Elizabeth and who are currently on Probation and/or Parole.  We will also service thirty(30) students ages 19-24 who can reside “anywhere in Union County” and do not have probation or parole status.  Young adults who possess a High School Diploma or GED do not qualify for the program, as preparing students for and facilitating their taking the GED is a major component of the program.  All Students will receive a bi-weekly stipend as well as uniforms.

Each student will receive educational instruction in the core curriculum subject, taught by State certified teachers.  They will be trained in construction fields by trained construction advisors.  The students will rotate schedules between General Education and Construction on a week on/week off basis.  At the completion of our 9-10 month course it is our intention to have all qualified students receive their GED (or HS Diploma), and a certificate in Construction.

In Mid September, the applicants will be TABE tested, receive an orientation, and participate in “Mental Toughness” Training.  At the conclusion of these events the students for the program will be selected.  The program daily schedule starts at 8am and ends at 5pm, with a one hour lunch period.  Brand New Day Youth Services will also provide these students will some other creative program components including, but not limited to, Financial Literacy, karate, Law Related Education, Life Skills, and Mentoring.
